Cooking Techniques
Air frying these pop tarts creates the perfect crispy outside while keeping the inside warm and gooey! The egg wash gives them that beautiful golden-brown color, just like store-bought ones. If you’re new to sealing pastries, press firmly with the fork when crimping – this keeps all that yummy filling inside where it belongs. A little flour on your work surface will make rolling and cutting the dough much easier.
Variations and Fun Twists
While this recipe uses jam, you can fill these treats with so many tasty options! Try Nutella for a chocolate lover’s dream, apple butter for a fall favorite, or mix cream cheese with your jam for a fancy twist. Want to make them extra special? Add a simple glaze on top once they’re cool – mix powdered sugar with a splash of milk and drizzle away! For a fun breakfast twist, try cinnamon sugar filling, just like your favorite cinnamon rolls.
Storage Tips
These homemade pop tarts stay fresh at room temperature in an airtight container for 2-3 days. Want to save them longer? Pop them in the fridge for up to a week! To reheat, just put them back in the air fryer for 1-2 minutes at 350°F – they’ll taste just as good as fresh. You can even freeze them for up to 3 months – just wrap each one in plastic wrap and store in a freezer bag. When you’re ready to eat, let them thaw and warm them up in your air fryer.
Serving Suggestions
These warm, flaky treats are perfect for breakfast or as an afternoon snack with a cold glass of milk. Make breakfast extra special by serving them alongside fresh fruit or yogurt. For a fancy brunch, cut them into smaller squares and arrange them on a platter with other pastries. Kids love them in their lunch boxes – they’re way more exciting than regular sandwiches!
Homemade Air Fryer Pop Tarts
Equipment
- Air Fryer
Ingredients
For the Pop Tarts
- 1 box refrigerated pie crust 2 crusts
- 1/3 cup jam raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, or your favorite
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer at 375°F/190°C for 5 minutes.
- Unroll the pie crusts out onto a lightly floured surface and cut out as many 2×3″ rectangles as you can– you should be able to get about 6 per crust.
- Gather any scraps of dough and reroll them to an ⅛” thick. Cut out as many rectangles as you can again– you should be able to get about 4 more.
- Place 2 teaspoons of jam into the center of one piece of dough and then place another rectangle on top. Pinch the edges to seal in the jam. Poke the top of the pop tart with a fork to create a vent and then crimp the edges with a fork to make sure they are fully sealed. Repeat with the remaining pop tarts.
- Beat the egg with a splash of water to form an egg wash and then brush the egg wash over the top of each pop tart.
- Place a few pop tarts into the prepared air fryer, making sure not to overcrowd the basket– you may need to cook multiple batches. Cook at 375°F/190°C for 8-10 minutes or until the pop tarts are golden brown and crisp.
- Transfer the pop tarts to a wire rack and allow them to cool completely before frosting.
